Figured and quartered lumber
Our figured and quartered hardwoods have distinctive
characteristics that make them a top choice for furniture
making and other fine woodworking. While they are
as smooth to the touch as other finished woods, they
have a shiny, textured appearance that attracts attention.
Sawing techniques
Different sawing methods give boards a distinct grain
pattern and performance level. The chosen cutting
method can also be specific to particular species.
Sawing methods for Clear and Select grades of wood
include:
Plain
or flat sawing This common method
produces the most lumber per log, making it a cost-effective
choice. Boards are produced tangentially to a tree's
growth rings, creating a flame-shaped grain pattern.
Quarter-sawn
By cutting a log at a 90-degree angle to
the growth rings, vertical graining is achieved.
This method yields fewer and narrower boards, making
them more costly.
Rift-sawn
Sawing at a 30-degree or greater angle to
the rings produces narrower boards with accentuated
vertical grain patterns. These boards are well suited
for fine furniture and applications where grain
matching is important.
